Donald Craig Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2010.
Donald R. Craig, M.D. passed away after a brief illness on August 10, 2010. He was 77.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. August 14, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Lubbock with Dr. Craig Curry and Rev. Marisue Smith presiding. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 19th St.
Donald was born October 17, 1932 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Dan Craig and Mida Gibens Craig. Orphaned at the age of 4, he grew up in the Methodist Children's Home in Waco with three of his siblings. Don graduated with honors from Waco High School, attended the University of Texas in Austin. He completed his medical training at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1957.
Don married Delia Ann Asberry in 1957. They were married for 53 years. They spent three years in Germany when Don was in the Army Medical Corp. They returned to Dallas in 1961 where he completed his pediatric residency at Children's Medical Center. In 1963 Don and Dee moved to Lubbock where he established a private practice in pediatrics which lasted 20 years.
Don was part of the TTU Health Science Center from its inception in 1979. He volunteered in the Pediatric Clinic for 10 years and eventually cut back his private practice to devote more time to the clinic. He eventually gave up private practice entirely to chair the Health Sciences Pediatric Clinic, where he remained for 6 years. Don also enjoyed lecturing in the Pediatric Department at TTUHSC and continued until 2005. He also was the volunteer director of the Lubbock Muscular Dystrophy Clinic for 20 years.
Don was president of the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical County Medical Society and served on the Lubbock County Health Board and the Ronald McDonald House Board. He was a member of the Lubbock Rotary Club.
Don was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lubbock for 47 years. He helped pioneer the Mexico Mission Ministry at the church, bringing his compassion to children and their parents. He was an avid supporter and volunteer for FUMC's Second Helpings ministry for five years. He was honored in 2005 as a Mission Hero of First United Methodist Church.
In 1997 Don was named a Distinguished Alumnus by Methodist Children's Home Alumni Association, which he continued to support during his adult life.
Aside from his family and busy professional life, Don enjoyed participating in sports. He began jogging before running shoes were created. He played tennis and biked. He loved snow skiing, especially with his family. His yard and garden were a source of pride.
He is survived by his wife, daughter Dana Hornung and granddaughter Heather of Tacoma WA; son David Craig of Denver, CO and grandchildren Austin and Holly of San Antonio, TX; daughter Carol Craig Reifsnyder and son-in-law Andrew, and grandchildren Erin and Emery of Austin, TX; and son Richard Craig of Lubbock. He also is survived by two sisters, Louise Broadbelt of Hersey, PA and Lorene Thomas of Little Rock, AK.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Stella Wells of Little Rock, AK and his brother Col. Dan Craig of San Antonio, TX.
He was well-loved and will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched. The family suggests memorials to, the Texas tech Department of Pediatrics, 3601 4th Street, MS 9406, Lubbock, TX 79430 or to FUMC's Second Helpings Ministry, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, TX, 79401.

Dr. Craig was my children's pediatrician starting in 1978. He was also the pediatrician to my sister and sister-in-laws children. He was the best, we could not have picked anyone better. He was definitely one a kind. I remember all his words of wisdom, and followed every word he said, that's how much I believed in him! He will surely be missed.

To the beautiful Craig family - So sorry to hear the news. I have such fantastic memories of Dr Craig and all the rest of you whom I have not seen in so many years. I still think of you all mesmerized around the TV whenever there is a good tennis match on! And to think I never realized what a humanitarian and achiever your dad was in addition to being such a great father. big hugs to all.

Dee - I am so sad that you have had to say goodbye to Dr. Craig. I told JennaSue, Justin and Jacob and if they'd known about it in time we all would have been at the services. He was very dear to us and I feel he saved JennaSue's life "more than once"...she was always getting into stuff...and making medical history throughout much of her "baby days"...but my boys refused to stop seeing you even when they grew up...I remember how you would let them in the back door after hours...We will certainly remember our experiences with you guys. Hope you can manage to live life without your dear partner...it will be hard. Love you all -- Joe, Debbie, Justin, Jacob, and JennaSue Alcorta. :(

Blessings and prayers to the large loving family Dr. Craig leaves here on earth. Dr. Craig was my doctor from the day I was born till I left for college. I remember many times he met us at his office on a Saturday to treat my asthma attacks and keep us from having to go to the ER. He was a wonderful, caring man and blessed countless lives. What a proud legacy to leave behind. God bless you all.

Hey Dad. I miss you so much. I am so sad I didn't get to say goodbye. I think you would have liked your services. The luncheon Ladies did a beautiful job and the tables were so pretty and cheery you would have been so happy. So many people sent such beautiful flowers, plants and food. Your service was lovely and spiritual. All the speaches were meaningful and heart felt and Shelby was so delicate and sweet. Jerry stood up there and read the scripture confidently and the whole choir sang and there was a soloist too. There were soo many people there. You were such a positive influence on so many people. You were always so happy and kind. We are all doing our best to cope. There is a whole in the world that is going to be hard to fill. I love you and will miss you always.
Your daughter,

P.S. that is indeed a special kitty. I like your kitty a lot!

Dr. Craig was the patient, loving caring physican when our son was born in 1966 ...and assumed a loving, nuturing and caring role in all of our lives as we took care of this new miracle in our lives.

With patience, assurance and gentleness he cared for the physical and emotional need of both child and parents, and for that we will always hold him with deep love in our hearts.

As our son grew, he became friends with Dick and that made the family even more special to us. It is in that friendship, we offer our love and prayers ... and thanks with all the other hosts of friends who loved, honored and appreciated him. Thank you all for sharing a blessed man with so many.

What a caring man Dr. Craig was, a thorough, kind, pediatrician who tended sick children without exposure to well-child checkups. We knew him for his love of the landscape, love of the mountains and of the arts. As the pediatrician for our two children, we appreciated his calm approach wellness. We send our love and prayers to his family and know Dr. Don met many at Heaven's Gate, with their welcoming him HOME.

It is a blessing to have lived a life of compassion, service and generosity as Don did. You two made the most of life in the community and we'll always have those memories. I'll be thinking of you as you move through the days and months ahead. I recently read the quote that impressed me:"Death--the last sleep? No, it is the final awakening." At this point in our life, a comforting thought--for me. Always remember that God is merciful and brings peace.

Dr. Craig was a great doctor and a great man!! He took good care of me when I was a young girl, was so gentle and kind that at the age of 13, I knew that he was my choice for my future children's pediatrician. When my little ones came along he saw us through everything and answered many a late night phone call from a scared young mother. How many doctors give out their home phone number? He even treated me as an adult one weekend when I couldn't get a hold of my own doctor and was coming down with strep throat!! Thank you Dr. Craig and Dee for always being so kind and taking wonderful care of our family! Dr. Craig will be greatly missed!! Dee and family our thoughts and prayers are with you!.....D'Jane, Laddy, Dustin and D'Etta Brown (Slaton, TX)

To Dee and Dr. Craig's family- Dr. Craig was my 3 childrens pediatrician since 1978. He was caring and helped me as a young frightened mother many times. He had a true love of children . I loved talking to Dee when she took the vital signs before each appointment. He was well thought of by many people and he certainly tried his best to help children. God Bless you all at this time.

Dr. Craig was a very good pediatrician. He was the pediatrician to my nieces and nephews. Unfortunately he did not get to doctor my children due to my husband being in the military at that time. A well respected Doctor and he will be missed.

When I was a senior student at Methodist Hospital school of Nursing in 1972 I did my pediatric rotation in Dr. Craigs office. I learned more from him in that one week than I did the whole 9 week rotation. He was so kind and gentle with the children. I never forgot all he taught me. He will be greatly missed. Precious Craig Family, May God's comfort of Love surround all of you during this time of telling someone so special "good-bye" for now. In 1990, his office provided a large suitcase filled with sample antibiotics to take back to the Methodist Chicuque Rural Hospital, Mozambique. That was when I realized how Corrie ten Boom undoubtedly felt.....not once was the bag opened until I reached the hospital -- 13,000 miles away, through multiple check points, and in a time of war. Now, Dr. Craig is being received by the One who created all. God bless you.
