Donald Polovich

To record the images that make a community visible to the people of the future is a remarkable commitment to an art. How many times did his name and work appear in the Rapid City Journal? Thousands. In the day and age when anybody can take a snapshot with their phone, the space for photographic art is limited. Don Polovich was one of the last of an age, the dedicated newspaper photographer.

Sorry to hear this. I very much enjoyed and respected Don during my 7 years at the Journal newsroom. He was a true photojournalist who honed and loved his craft, and who taught me many things about newspaper photography. He covered all the major news stories in the Hills from 1970 til he retired. I have to laugh now about one of the jokes he said, "I´d like my ashes spread around the newsroom when I´m gone." Such a great sense of humor. He will be missed.
