DONALD S. STEARNS, 81, of North Spring Street, Concord, died Tuesday October 10, 2006 at Harborside Pheasantwood Health Care Facility in Peterborough after a short illness.
He was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire on December 26, 1924 son of the late Sidney and Marion (Cutter) Stearns.
He was a graduate of Hancock High School and later graduated from the University of New Hampshire’s two year applied farming course.
During World War II, Mr. Stearns in the United States Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic and aerial gunner in an A-20 Havoc of the 410th Light Bombardment Group, flying 38 missions over Germany.
Mr. Stearns lived in Concord, NH for most of adult life. He owned a rooming house for twenty three years, providing affordable housing to many people over the years. In addition to time spent with family, he also enjoyed working around his house and taking care of his rose gardens.
His family includes his two daughters, Donna Biggerstaff and her husband Jeffrey of Irving Texas and Diane Streeter and husband Christopher of Hancock; two granddaughters Melissa Cardin and husband John of Rochester and Katie Streeter of Hancock; his brother Robert Stearns of Livermore, California; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son Donald Alan Stearns in 1948 and a brother William Stearns of Concord in 2004
There will be no calling hours.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2:00PM in Norway Plain Cemetery in Hancock.
Rev. Matthew Crebbin, of Hancock will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Concord area chapter of the Salvation Army, 58 Clinton Street, Concord, New Hampshire 03301.
The Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street, Jaffrey is assisting the family with arrangements.
