Donna Helen Brown South, 64, of Lynn Haven, passed away on May 9 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Donna was born on July 23, 1954 in Pine Bluff, AR to Lewis R. Brown, Sr. and Emily Helen Crump Brown. Raised in Starkville, MS, she attended Mississippi State University, where she pledged Alpha Delta Pi and received both her Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) and Master of Science (Statistics) degrees. Donna achieved her Specialist in Education (Mathematics) degree in 1997 from Florida State University and was National Board Certified in 2001. With a gift for fun and accessible mathematics education, Donna taught at Bay High School for 20 years. She won the Henshaw-Whitley Award from BHS in 2005. She retired early, after being diagnosed with a serious lung disease. She received a lung transplant in 2006 and returned to an active life of traveling and tutoring as soon as she could. She also became the Registrar of the Daughters of the American Revolution and enjoyed her role of procuring membership for many in North Florida.

Donna was loyal, generous and interested in everything from seeing the world and taking pictures to completing puzzles and sharing desserts. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Louis C. South of Sulligent, AL; her daughters Amy South of Dadeville, AL and Emily Easterling of Asheville, NC; her son Louis C. South II of Lancaster, PA; her brothers David Brown of Morton, MS and Lewis R. Brown Jr. of Memphis, TN. Her six grandchildren have had the honor of knowing her consistent love and presence; she traveled to visit them whenever she could and was always supportive of their interests.

A Celebration of Life service for friends and family will be held at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church (222 N. Bonita Ave. Panama City, FL 32401) on Wednesday, May 22 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Please join us in honor of our beloved, Donna.

Lou our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God Bless. Jerry and Song Ae LaFrance

I enjoyed Donna as we taught together at BHS. She was so adored by her students because she loved each and every one of them. I respected her as a teacher and role model. She did her best to attend every athletic or other event her students were in. They knew she really cared about them as individuals. She will be missed. Prayers for her family as they deal with their loss! Cyndy Duke.

I extend my deepest condolences to Donna's family. Donna was one of the best math teachers at Bay High. I thought the world of her. Rest in peace Donna.

So sorry for your recent loss of sweet Donna. She will remain in my memories as a great teacher and friend. The family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
