Floyd Mortuary and Crematory Inc. - Lumberton Obituary

Dorothy K. West, 72, of Lumberton, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021. She was born in Lumberton, NC on October 30, 1949 to the late Walter Talmadge Kinlaw and the late Lucille Kinlaw. She had four younger sisters: Freida Stephens, Debbie Lowe (deceased), Carol Klock, and Elvie Kinlaw.

She graduated from Littlefield High School and then entered the Nursing Program at Southeastern Community College, where she earned her licensure as RN.

In July 1970, she married Dean West and they had 2 children, Wendy West Walters and Walter Dean West. After several years working as an ER nurse, she decided to teach high school Health Occupations to be home more with her children.

As her kids entered high school, she went back to work with Wesley Pines Retirement Home as a nurse. After her husband died in 2010, she retired and began teaching Certified Nursing Assistant courses at Robeson Community College.

After 50 years of nursing, this only shows how much she loved being around people, teaching, and taking care of people.

Her son, Walter Dean West, married Amanda Freed West and they have 3 children: Thomas Dean West, Elizabeth Renee West, Samuel Ira West, along with 2 bonus grandkids, Alexendria Thompkins and Shania Turbeville.

Her daughter, Wendy West Walters, married Bryan Walters in 2002 and they have 2 children, Sidnee Brynn Walters and Madilyn Macoy Walters.

Dorothy was very proud of her grandkids and loved spending time with them.

One of her fondest memories was to talk about her trip to Israel, where she was baptized in the Jordan River. Her heart was so full. To be able to be in the same places where Jesus had once walked was so overwhelmingly special to her.

Her favorite things were her family, Christmas, taking pictures, and traveling. She had been able to travel to Israel, Alaska, Chicago, Maine, Pennsylvania, Washington, Kentucky, Missouri, and Florida.

The family will receive friends and loved ones on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church, 5089 Old Whiteville Road in Lumberton, NC.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Floyd Memory Gardens, 3720 Old Whiteville Road in Lumberton, NC, with Rev. Blake Dodd and Rev. Mark Meadows officiating.

Not sure what to say?

Dorothy was no doubt an angel sent from heaven. She was my Health Occupations Teacher in High School. She was an awesome person teacher leader and a no doubt a Christian lady. She made a profound difference in the lives of people she encountered including me. May God's mercy and peace surround the family during this most difficult time. I am so sorry for the family's loss but happy cause I know she is in heaven.

"Suggie" was Dorothy's name until she started school. It was a name that truly fit through life - little farm girl, always loved. Thanks "Lord" for a life well lived.

Dorothy had such a kind loving spirit about her .Prayers for the family.I know she will be missed.RIP

Aunt Dorothy will be missed. Her guidance during the last few months with momma were a blessing. I will miss our phone calls and chats. I know that her and momma are together and have a lot of catching up to do. I love you Aunt Dorothy.

I'm so sorry. Mrs. West was a very sweet lady. I always thought a lot of her. She was a good Christian lady. She has always been so nice to me and everyone that knew her loved her. She had a great personality and she loved being around people. She was a great teacher. I know she loved her kids and grandkids very much. I definitely will be praying for her family and friends. May God bless you and may he help you through the days and years that go by. He definitely understands your pain. You...
