Edgar Slagle Obituary

Edgar Slagle "Bus" MONROE - Mr. Edgar "Bus" Slagle, 90, went home to be with his Lord and Savior early Saturday morning, September 12, 2015, from his lifelong home on Griffith Road. Bussie was born July 14, 1925 in Union County, the son of the late C.A. and Hattie Slagle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slagle was preceded in death by his wife Dotchie Wooten Slagle and his son Eddie; two sisters: Mary Belle Fowler and Bernice Reeder; four brothers: William, John, James, and Jesse. At age 17, Bussie left Monroe to join the Navy and serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He returned to Monroe after the war to finish high school at Mineral Springs. He worked for Monroe Hardware for 50 years, was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church, and attended camp meeting at Pleasant Grove Camp Ground his whole life. He loved and cared for his wife of 62 years until her passing. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and was loved and respected by all. Bus was the epitome of a fine southern gentleman. Mr. Slagle is survived by his daughter Rebecca Hill, her husband Harry, and grandchildren Frank, Hayley, and Emily Hill of Dania Beach, FL and many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation Monday, September 14, 2015 from 6:00 PM until 8:00PM at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Slagle will be 11:00AM Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Eddie Price, with burial to follow with military honors in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family suggests that memorials be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2518 Lancaster Hwy., Monroe, NC 28112. We were saddened to hear of "Mr. Bus's" passing, but find great joy in knowing we will see him again one day. He was such a fun person to be around and he was so loving to everyone. I worked at Monroe Hardware in the early 1980's with Bussie. He was a salesman and I worked with Mrs. June Mullis making price changes as well as working with telephone sales. I was pretty much a stranger to Monroe. He was always interested in me and asked how I was doing. We both ate breakfast at the Palace Restaurant on Highway 200. There was never a time at the restaurant or at the office that he didn't come over and ask how things were going. He even introduced me to one of the waitresses at the Palace. Because of him, we became friends. Being a stranger to Monroe, this meant so much to me. Many years have passed, but I will always have fond memories of these times.

Such a wonderful couple! They blessed my life in many ways. During those long days at the restaurant they would show up to eat and suddenly we forgot we were working, such a pleasure to be around, And then he was alone and I went to visit and cheer him up but it was always me that left wirh a blessing. Bussie was truly a southern gentleman and a true Christian. We have so many memories of him and Dotchie. He made an impact on his entire world and demonstrated unconditional love toward his dear wife. He proved his love of country during WWII and came home and lived out his life for Christ. This world is a better place because Bussie passed through.

Mr. Slagle was such a sweet, kind man to our whole family. He reminded me very much of my grandfather. We were lucky to go out for pizza with him the last time he was here in Florida, and it was great to see him enjoying himself and interacting with my son Preston. He was a very special person, known as Papaw to all the kids down here, and he will be missed very much!
