South Hadley, Edwin S. Weaver, 77, died Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Loomis House in Holyoke with family by his side. Born in Hartford, CT, January 30, 1933, he was the son of Elbert and Grace (Kelsey) Weaver. He lived in Madison, CT for many years before moving to So. Hadley in 1958. Edwin received his B.S. in Chemistry, Summa Cum Laude, in 1954 from Yale University, and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1959. Edwin was a professor at Mount Holyoke College for 40 years, retiring in 1998, and had been Professor on the Alumnae Foundation from 1978 to 1998. In his leisure, he was an accomplished classical pianist, and sang bass with the So. Hadley Chorale for 17 years. He also enjoyed opera at the Lincoln Center in NYC and appreciated relaxing at this summer home in Madison, CT. Among the many places to which he traveled were Alaska, Hawaii, China, Ireland, the Panama Canal and Italy. He will be deeply missed by his wife Rita (Cote) Starzyk, along with his 5 children Frances Weaver and her husband Carl Schmidt of Exton, PA, Thomas Weaver and his wife Susan of Chelmsford, Janet Weaver and her husband Neil Morelli of Harvest, AL, Patricia Weaver of Cary, NC and David Weaver of Chicopee. He also leaves 4 step children Lance Starzyk and wife Tamara of Thorndale, TX, Joseph Starzyk and his partner Keira of Buckland, MA, Jacqueline Houle and husband Lionel of Warrenton, VA, and Elizabeth Moriarty and husband John of So. Hadley. Additionally, 3 brothers Andrew and Elbert of Madison, CT and Allan of Yanceyville, NC survive him. He also leaves 4 grandchildren, one great grandchild and 13 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. Besides his parents, his wife of 40 years, Dretta (Shorkey) preceded him in death in 1995. Funeral services will be Friday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Abbey Memorial Chapel at Mount Holyoke College followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
