Eleanor Bowerman Obituary

BOWERMAN, Eleanor Ruth
1939-2023
Eleanor died September 22, 2023 at Resthaven Lodge in Sidney, where she had lived for 7 years.
Elly grew up in Port Alberni, daughter of Gwen and Art Bowerman and younger sister of Raymond (Marilyn and son Craig and grandchildren Colton and Ashley). They were a close family, attending All Saints Church in Alberni. Elly was active in the Girl Guides and as a Sunday School teacher. Her dog, Butch, was a constant companion. Her Aunt Margaret and Uncle Jack Macauley [children Grant (Sharon) Marian (Rick Klassen) Glen] were part of the unofficial support group for Elly; the two families were intertwined and spent much time together. Elly graduated from Alberni District Secondary School, walking the stage in 1960. She had excellent grades and took Office Business courses. Using her entrepreneurial skills, she opened HAND AND HAND ENTERPRISES in Alberni in the late 1960s, a one-person stationary store that thrived using her Christian beliefs and tenacity. During her time in Port Alberni she was a trailblazer in handicapped awareness, lobbying for accessibility for those with disabilities, so they could live independent lives. In the 70's she took these skills to Victoria and opened up an office business on Yates Street.
She then started HiWeCare - Handicapped Individuals Worldwide Encouraging Christian Awareness Reaching Everyone. Elly and group members praised God at services in many churches and continued lobbying for accessibility, promoting ramps and accessible washrooms and encouraging individuals with disabilities to participate in their churches and communities. In acknowledgement, Elly received a certificate from the Legislature.
Elly was a 58 year Associate of the Sisters of St. John the Divine and regularly supported the Sisters of Poor Clare in Duncan. She also was a long time supporter of Precious Jewels Ministries which cares for vulnerable children in the Philippines and Africa. Elly authored a Book -Journey in Love-Reflections and Prayers by Elly Bowerman and Illustrations by Nigel Tuffy.
Hallelujah, Elly is with her Lord and Saviour Jesus. A celebration of Life will take place at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Sidney, October 21, 2023 at 2pm. Internment at a later time at the family plot on Pender Island. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Open Door, BC Children's Hospital, the Girl Guides of Canada or a charity of your choice.
