In her spare time Irene loved to spend time with her family, playing a few hands of spades, bid whist, or crazy 8. She was known to bake delicious homemade cakes and apple crisp. Equally important she loved singing and ministering in song. She traveled around for years singing with the Music Ministry and the Gospel Melodies.

Irene married Bernard Ashton Sr in 1975 in Leonardtown, Maryland. They were married for 41 years. Irene was a great woman of faith during her young adulthood she was a member of Ebenezer AME Church, Charlotte Hall, Maryland. Later in her Christian journey she became a member of Bible Temple Church, Mechanicsville, Maryland. Most recently after relocating to Houston, Texas she was a member of Abundant Love Christian Center.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Elsie Holton; siblings Emmanuel Woodland, Kelsey (Mary), Otis (Laura), Laverne (Barbara), and Percy; children Nikesha Irene and LaTrina Monique Ashton.

Irene is survived by her spouse Bernard of Houston, Texas; her daughter Terra (James) of Sunnyvale, California and son Bernard Jr of Houston, Texas; her siblings Mary Bowman of Baltimore, Maryland, George Alvin of Houston, Texas, Sylvester (Zeldar) of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, Daniel (Ethel) of Waldorf, Maryland, Jackie (Benny) of Mechanicsville, Maryland, and Larry (LaVonia) of Waldorf, Maryland; grandchildren Geral, Tim (Lauren), Tyrone, and Nevaeh; great-grandchildren Kyleigh, Camden, and Kaydence; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
