Elwood Alfred Schut, 84 of Patterson passed away Tuesday, October 2nd at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.
Elwood was born in Ripon, CA to Alfred and Aneta Schut and was a resident of Patterson for 58 years. He graduated from Patterson High School in 1953, where he lettered in four different sports each year and served as Student Body President. He was honored to have hosted his 65th high school reunion this past August. He also attended and played football for Modesto Junior College and Fresno State. He served in the US Army and was proud to represent them on the football field. In 1960 Elwood became an insurance agent and opened his own business, he was named Agent of the Year in 1970 and he continued to work until his death.
Mr. Schut was a member of the Patterson Rotary Club, receiving a 50 year perfect attendance acknowledgment and Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, and the Patterson Masonic Lodge #488 with recognitions including a 50 year pin and the Hiram Award. He was a parishioner of the Federated Church, a Patterson Fire Department Volunteer Firefighter for 25 years, member and former President of the Apricot Fiesta, Patterson Township Historical Society, P.R.I.D.E., and served as President of the Chamber of Commerce. He was Board member and commission representative for various City of Patterson committees, Del Puerto Hospital District, Stanislaus Juvenile Department, and Patterson Economic Strategic Committee.
Elwood enjoyed farming, weekend construction projects, world travel and regular coffee meetings with his buddies. With his booming voice and big smile, he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Mr. Schut is survived by his sons, Evan (Katheryn) Schut and Collin (Lisa) Schut; brothers Alan Schut and Mike Schut. He was grandfather to Sadie, Ethan, Ewan, Cody and Ryan. Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Betty Howell and his wife of 52 years, Joland Schut.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, October 16th at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Patterson. Inurnment will be private.
