George Savaria Obituary

SAVARIA George E. Savaria Jr., 84, passed away January 14, 2011 at Community Hospice of North Florida. He was born August 21, 1926 in New Bedford, MA and was predeceased by his parents, George and Eva (Sicard) Savaria. He graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1944 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a Quartermaster in the Navy during World War II. He earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. George accepted a position with the Allied Chemical Company in New York where he eventually became the Director of Personnel. One of his greatest personnel achievements was meeting Grace Redyke an occupational nurse for Allied. George and Grace were married on November 21, 1953. After 20 years with Allied, George accepted a position in Tampa, FL as the Director of Personnel for Jim Walter Corporation. In his retirement years George was active in the Knights of Columbus, rising to the rank of 4th Degree Knight. An Eagle Scout himself, he was involved in scouting for a number of years. He served as a Troopmaster in Ridgewood NJ and was a charter member of the Order of the Arrow. Most recently, he was an Eagle Scout advisor for Boy Scouts in the Jacksonville area. He and Grace were active in their congregations throughout their marriage, most recently in St. Margaret Catholic Church in Maggie Valley, NC and San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church in St. Johns, FL. They also were active members of the Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary in NC. George is survived by his wife, Grace Savaria; sister, Claire (Dick) DeRocker of Hayesville NC; sons, George Savaria III of Bostwick FL, Arthur (Marsha) Savaria of St. Johns FL, and daughter, Jeanne (Mike) Kuperberg of Bethesda MD; granddaughters: Shannon, Jessica, Jordan and Ansley; a great grandson: William; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be Celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church, 1718 State Road 13 N., St. Johns, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to Boy Scout Troop 278 and sent to San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church. hey gramps! guess what?? i graduated last weekend! Grandma had front row seats and was very happy to see me graduate! wish you were there :( but i know you were watching from above..i also wore you necklace so that way you were there every step that i made! we had a really fun dinner after. you would have enjoyed it! i love and miss you alot!!!!

i was thinking about tonight grandpa as i was ordering my graduation stuff, i cant belive you wont be here in person watching me walk on june 4th but i know you will be watching me from above. i think about you everyday and wonder what it would be like still with you here. i miss you soooo much words can not explain how much i miss you. everytime i go down to the house it feels so different with out you there. but i know you are there in spirit watching over grandma and sparky. were taking good care of the love of your life for you. we took her to go see jordans college last weekend, you would have loved it. we are all trying our best to make you proud,,especially me. ive worked so hard to get where i am today. and i know you will be so proud of me when i graduate this year! i have so much i wanna tell you and talk to you about. forever and always - love and miss you grandpa!!!! love ansley

We have fond memories of family gatherings in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Florida that included George and his family. He was always a kind, thoughtful man, devoted to his family. I'm very sorry to hear that George has passed away. We last saw him in 2005 while visiting Dick & Claire on vacation. My dad and he were close -- they enjoyed swapping their WWII Navy stories.

Hello friends, I work with Art's wife, Marsha, at BlueCross BlueShield of Florida. I never met or knew Mr. Savaria. But, I lost my own father just four months ago, so I think I know a little about some of the pain Mr. Savaria's family is experiencing now. During the time my father was sick, I reconnected with my Catholic faith and found that attending mass helped to strengthen me (and I surely needed the help). If I didn't believe with all my heart that my father and I will be reunited in heaven some day, I don't think I would be able to continue on my life's journey. For whatever it is worth, I am praying for the entire Savaria family. Praying that Jesus will comfort them and give them the strength to help each other during the sad times. Please believe with all your heart that you will see Mr. Savaria again. And that he is really OK now. No more pain, no more suffering. Hold tight to your memories of time spent with Mr. Savaria, they will ease your grief. And never leave anything unsaid to your loved ones. Do your best each day and "enjoy every sandwich". Take care.

The first time I met George was at a Christ Renews His Parish weekend 3 1/2 years ago. His wife, Grace, and I were attending the womens' retreat together. Some men of the parish, dressed in tuxedos, served us dinner. George surprised Grace by being one of our "waiters". He looked so handsome in the tuxedo. The love he and Grace have for each other was very evident. It was a further treat to discover that this wonderful couple live down the street from me. I will miss George very much. My thoughts and prayers go with Grace and her family. May God comfort them in the difficult time ahead.
