Services for Mr. Gilbert Hewlett, 85 of Tyler, TX, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2021, at Burks Walker Tippet Funeral Home with Reverend Dyan Dietz officiating followed by burial at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery. Mr. Hewlett passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021, in Tyler. He was born on October 26, 1935, in Wichita KS to his late parents, Julian B. and Leola M. Hewlett and was always looked up to since he was the oldest of 10 siblings: Dave Hewlett, Rosie Egidy, Richard Hewlett, Tommy Hewlett, Randy Hewlett, Madeline Hewlett, Nickie Hewlett, Danny Hewlett, Nanny Parker and Annabelle Vinduska.

He graduated from North High in Wichita, KS where he “walked uphill to and from school” and later attended college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He lived in Tyler the past 51 years as a very devoted father who enjoyed playing golf, camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking and always had an unending list of things to do. His work life included many occupations beginning as dance instructor in the early 50’s, carpet/tile installer and a trucking freight manager & salesman for most of his adult life.

He was Honorably Discharged from the Air National Guard of Texas and the reserve of the United States Air Force in June 1962. Gil was a long-time member of the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) where he cooked and competed in hundreds of chili cookoffs; and was voted Great Pepper of the Year in 2008.

Gil was preceded in death by his son Michael Hewlett and his wife of 57 years, Louise Hewlett, the mother of his children. He is survived by his loving family, son and daughter-in-law Ron and Wanda Hewlett of Berryville, TX; a daughter Kathy Hewlett of Tyler; grandchildren Jonathan Hewlett and Gregory Hewlett, Katie Costlow and Kyle Nipp; and his second wife Wanda J. Bullock

Pallbearers include Kyle Nipp, Nace Heard, Larry Williford, Marsha McCoy, Chris Yater, and Alan Hulbert. Honorary pallbearers are Judge Barron, Kevin Palmer, and Mike Cunningham.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Wanda J. Bullock and all the other dedicated healthcare professionals at several Tyler medical facilities who took such special care of Dad during his last years.

.. .. .. Rest In Peace dear Gil, prayers and condolence to your many friends and dear family.

My veteran brother you will be missed by all at VFW Post 1799. Rest In Peace.

Gil, you were a dear friend. I will miss you. I am so happy I got to buy your mother-in-laws house, across the street from you and Lou, and get to know the two of you. The fun times, the Kentucky Derby parties, and just getting together for a drink. I so enjoyed when you would join a bunch of us to go out dancing. The fun we had, plus, a good dancing partner. Going out to eat together. You were just a dear friend and I will miss you. Thanks for the memories. Now, you will be back...

Rest well ole buddy.

I love you so much. I will never forget sanding the boat FOREVER and climbing in Bud's doghouse so WE could get electricity in there so Bud would be warm in the winter. I have loved you with all my heart. Thank you for enriching my life.
