Prattville - Gwendolyn Teel Babston, age 90, a lifelong resident of Autauga County and recently of Tallassee, passed away on May 15, 2021 at her home after a brief illness.

She is preceded in death by her parents William Tolbert Dixon and Eula Mae Wilson White, and by her husband Rance Teel in 2001 and later husband Ray Babston in 2005, brother, William Tolbert Dixon, Jr, son in law, Stan Wilson and step son Zane Babston, all of Autauga County.

She is survived by her daughters Joanne Wilson and Patti Teel both of Tallassee. Gwen leaves behind her grandchildren. Wendy Bell (Mark), Terry Varner (Gary) of Tallassee; Jordan Warren (Jason) of Troy; Tara Beasley of Columbus, Texas; Ami Latham of Mt. Olive; Adam Borchik (Nicole), Grove Town, Georgia; Candice Morgan, Pace, Florida; Mandy Bowen of Tallassee and sister in law Jean Dixon of Prattville. She enjoyed her 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and her devoted cat Lola.

Gwen Babston was an Alumnus of Troy State University receiving her BS in Music and MS in Supervision and Administration with a AA certificate in Vocational Education. While at Troy she was a freshman cheerleader and later joined the Troy State marching band playing the clarinet. She was a teacher at Marbury High School, later transferring to the Prattville Jr. High and then to Autauga County High school where she was the DECA teacher and taught special education. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, serving as Vacation Bible School Director and pianist for many years. Gwen spent most of her life serving her community. Known as a trailblazer, she was elected to the Prattville City Council in 1980, as the first woman ever elected to that position. Years later, after being stopped for running a stop sign, she asked the Judge to give her community service. She worked out her "time" at the Chamber and then became their full time membership chairman. Gwen spent many years working for the Chamber of Commerce always wanting to make her community better.

The family would like to thank Ivy Creek Hospice in Dadeville, especially to Christy, April, Chassity and Dr. Erving, pastor, for the loving care they showed our family.

A Visitation will be held May 22, 2021 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Prattville, Al. The service will be held at 11:00 am following the visitation. The family will hold a private burial.

Gwen's favorite charity was St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, if you would like to make a memorial in her name or to any charity you love.
