A friend of my family in the 60s, Harlan became a sounding board for me these last few years. Forever grateful.

Our friendship was a gift. I am in awe of his range of knowledge whether sports, writing, humor, or Chicago street life. I join the many, many others who mourn his passing.

Harlan was great neighbor, always friendly, willing to help out whenever he was asked. It was a pleasure to know him these past 18 years we've been neighbors. A mensch to the nth! His memoirs and comments on the world we inhabit were a joy to read, a window to his intellect, his passions, and love for his family. I will miss him.
