North Western- H Jean Siegel, 78, of State Rt. 46, passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at her residence while under the loving care of her family and Hospice Care. She was born in Ramsey, Illinois, on March 12, 1937, a daughter of Raymond and Elsie Hooker Manley. Jean grew up in Ramsey, moving to Chicago in her teen years, where she completed her education. On July 22, 1964, she was united in marriage with Airman LeRoy E. Siegel, at Great Falls, Montana, where Mr. Siegel was serving his country in the U.S. Airforce. In the fall of 1965, the couple moved to Frenchville, before moving to their present home in North Western, in 1966. For several years Mrs. Siegel served as a troop leader for several Girl Scout troops in Rome. Jean was also a professional seamstress who sewed and altered clothing for many residents of the Town of Western. She will be fondly remembered for the teddy bears that she made and other crafts that she enjoyed constructing and selling at area craft shows. Mrs. Siegel was a member of Westernville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of Western Post 1846 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her husband, LeRoy, Jean is survived by her children, Richard (Jan) Strelak, Las Vegas, NV, Russell Strelak, Robert (Monika) Strelak, all of Chicago, Thomas Siegel, North Western, Andrea (Kevin) Salhoff, Ravena; four grandchildren, Melinda Mitchell, WI, Jessica Egner, Nicholas Strelak, both IL, William Salhoff, Ravena; one brother, Samuel Walker. She was predeceased by a sister Dixie, and by brothers Darrell Manley and Lynn Walker. She is also survived by her dog, and best friend, "Nixie." Her family wishes to express their grateful appreciation to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc, for the loving and compassionate care they accorded Jean. Her Funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Prince, Boyd & Hyatt Funeral Home, Inc. 210 West Court St. Rome, with interment to follow in Westernville Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413, or to the Humane Society of Rome P.O. Box 4572, Rome, NY 13442.
