SIMMONS, Helen Elizabeth Tankersley, 99, passed away at the home of her son, Robert T. Simmons, in St. Inigoes, Maryland, on January 17, 2010. She was the daughter of Hugh L. Tankersley Sr. and Myra M. Tankersley of Richmond, Va. She was the eldest of 10 children and has four surviving sisters, Beverley Massey and Audrey Tankersley of Richmond, Va., Sue Almond of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Anne Burton of Paradise, Calif. She is also survived by her son, Robert T. Simmons; daughter-in-law, Judith Kurz Simmons; granddaughter, Anna M. Burke and her husband, Kenny Burke; and great-grandson, John Thornton Burke. Brothers and sisters preceding her in death were Hugh L. Tankersley Jr. of Roanoke, Va., John F. Tankersley, Julian P. Tankersley and Catherine Parrish of Richmond, Va. and Myra L. Tankersley of Los Angeles, Calif. Sisters-in-law, Helen Moncol Tankersley and Thelma Avery Tankersley; and brothers-in-law, Julius Almond and Dr. William Broaddus Massey, also survive. Her caregivers were Vanessa Collins of Richmond, Va. and Gay Carroll and Shirley Scriber, both of St. Mary's County, Md. Helen was married to Ernest Thornton Simmons in 1934 and lived most of her life at 2303 Ginter St. in Lakeside, Va. She resided with her son and daughter-in-law in Maryland since 2006. She was an active member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church since 1947 and participated in all areas of church activity. She served as a deaconess and was also on the Lord's Supper committee. She was a member of the Joy Class. She received great pleasure during her years as a Sunday School teacher for the Beginner Department. She was also a worker at the polls in Lakeside for many elections. Two of her favorite hobbies were raising African violets and playing Canasta. She was in the same Canasta group for more than 50 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 456, Ridge, Md. 20680, or Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, Md. 20650. The family will receive friends from to 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 21, at Bliley's - Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. The celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 22, at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
