Not sure what to say?

I and my family including Vic Marin, Esq. and Valerie Marin, who all attended South High School with Herbert, only heard recently about Herbert's death. I attended Senior Prom with Herbert in 1968 and had a wonderful time! Herbert was a brilliant, kind, and generous man who impressed everyone who interfaced with him. Our condolences to his family, who we all remember as so hard-working and kind.

My message is a bit different than the rest, owing to a couple things. One, I am not family, and, two, I knew Herbert long before almost everybody else who has left a note.

I was in third grade at Franklin Elementary when we had a new student join us, Herbert Jung. He had just "skipped" second grade and landed in our class. He was a bit smaller (younger) than the rest of us but was well mannered and very bright. Before he arrived, I considered myself the reigning smart kid in the...

I know his passing was many years ago but since we are planning the 50th reunion of South High Bakersfield's class of 1968 I wanted to say hello to any of the Jung family and share just how special Herbert was to his classmates. Such a kind, sensitive and brilliant man. He made a positive difference in our lives.

I am a grandson of Penny's sister who was living in China. Years ago, I knew from my grandma and from some pieces of photos of Jung's family that Herbert was one of Penny's sons. That's the only impression in my mind at that time.

The first time I met Herbert was at Guangzhou airport during Jung family's tour to China in the year of 2005. But it's something like no more than 10 min and just a few words.

The second time I met him was on May 16th,2007. After I finished a...

Today is Herbert's birthday - December 14th. He would be 59 years old. It is still difficult to realize that he is gone. However, this quote from Dr. McCoy in the movie "Star Trek - the Wrath of Khan" puts his passing in a better perspective; "He is not really dead ... as long as we remember him."

Recently I defrosted our garage freezer and came across a container of beef tongue. This was given to me by mom during my last visit with Herbert in February. Beef tongue was one of Herbert’s favorite foods. Though I liked it on occasions, I was not as passionate about it as Herbert. I finally took this container and put it in refrigerator to defrost and will probably eat it with rice over the next several days.

Afterwards, I thought about Herbert and the last time I saw him. ...

The past week’s lightening and thunder in the San Francisco Bay area and my subsequent recurring dreams take me back to Bakersfield prior to 1959. We lived in an old Spanish style duplex at 1601 & 1603 “O” Street. For a long time, we lived in one half of the duplex until our dad and friends cut entrances between the adjacent hallways. We instantly ended up with twice of everything – double the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and two kitchens and two living rooms. The house had a huge front...

As kids we didn’t have access to computer games or even that many toys. So we had to make do within our surroundings to entertain ourselves. In our house on Stillman Ave in Bakersfield, we spent plenty of time in the backyard as it was north-facing. Adjacent to the concrete porch was a small bush which had red berries about the size of your thumbnail. It was not a pyracantha bush and I haven’t seen a bush like this since. It seemed that the spring time was when the berries were fully...
