Howard and I were fellow graduate students at the University of Chicago and had parallel careers as historians of India. He was a dedicated and productive scholar.

I first met Howard when he was completing his graduate studies at Chicago in the early 1970s. He held a well-deserved reputation as both a scholar and a teacher. If I shut my eyes, and listen, I can hear him speaking-his style was one of a sort of restrained excitement and earnestness that more or less compelled his listener to engage. His sincerity and concern for others was memorable. Our life and our field were enriched so very much by Howard's contributions.

Sarah, Susie, Josh, and Lisa - We´re heartbroken to learn of Howard´s passing. We have terrific memories of his helping us acclimatize to Philadelphia way back in 1973, and sharing our first high holidays at your then shul in West Oak Lane, watching you kids grow up, sharing simchas over the years, and seeing Howard stay centered even in Temple´s uncentered world. We had our last lunch here in NY this spring before he left for India. We´ll remember him as a vital and engaged mensch, who took seriously his responsibility for the world. May his memory be for a blessing.

Coffee with dates and ice cream, gupshup and Mrs. Maisel re-runs soon, Howard. Rest in peace, my friend. I'll always cherish your humour, wisdom and warmth. You are missed more than I can say. Ahmedabad won't feel the same without you.
