First met her when she tutored me the summer after 3rd grade so I could skip 4th grade. Later had her as a language arts and social studies teacher at Jefferson. My parents were friends with her and Ben for decades. She was a wonderful inspiring teacher. Last saw her at Finnish assisted living in Lake Worth about 4 yrs ago. Still think of her every year when biking the Minnesota MS150 ride which goes thru Finlayson since she lived there before moving to IL. May her memory be a blessing.

My prayers go out to you. Mrs. Haapanen was a wonderful teacher and left a lasting legacy with all of the students she guided.

Dear Jerry, Kathy & family. I was so very sorry to hear of Irene's passing. She was a mentor to me when I was a new teacher at Jack Benny and we remained friends throughout the years. She was a dedicated teacher and such a great person. I still have a necklace that she brought me back from one of her trips. I am so sorry I didn't make the service. i know that as time passes you will have so many MANY fond and interesting memories of Irene as we all do. She touched so many lives, I can...

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

May your mom and dad now be reunited in heaven. They are in our prayers.

She will be remembered not only as a great teacher but a mentor who inspired you to reach above and beyond. She was one of my favorite teachers.
