SMIGEL--Irwin E.,

of New York, NY, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in the early hours of October 17, 2016. He was born to Bella and Sebastian Smigel on October 9, 1924. Loving and adored husband of Lucia for 60 years. Beloved and cherished father of Bellanca and Robert, revered grandfather of Russell, Erik and Aaron Rutter and Daniel, Ethan and Roey Smigel, and devoted brother of Eileen Schrott and the late Louis Smigel. Dr. Smigel graduated from Stuyvesant High School and NYU and its College of Dentistry. As a dentist he pioneered tooth bonding and other advances that profoundly changed his profession. He developed the Supersmile tooth whitening system. But his greatest satisfaction in work was in the lives he touched, the countless patients he helped and the thousands of dentists he taught and inspired worldwide. As President of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics he also established aesthetic dental societies in France, Italy, Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, Turkey, and Israel. He was fiercely proud of his Jewish heritage, helped build a dental school in the Hatikva quarter of Tel Aviv and donated all of his earnings from lectures to the UJA. Dr. Smigel loved literature of all kinds, theatre, art museums and watching sports, underdogs in particular. He was a generous and loving soul and above everything else he loved his family. We are eternally blessed to have felt his love.
