Jack Eugene Shoemaker

Jack Eugene Shoemaker, age 84 of Warren, died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 27, 1933 in Ashland, Ohio, son of the late Harry and the late Lorna Irene (nee: Patterson) Shoemaker. A graduate of Detroit's prestigious Southeastern High School, Jack not only poured himself into his school studies, but also into the school's sports programs as well. As a member of their basketball team, he was honored to have been a player on the team the year Southeastern took home the trophy as State Champs! Baseball was also a sport Jack enjoyed, so he was more than delighted to add that to his high school athletics repertoire. As an adult, Jack's sporting pleasures took on another venue,…archery. Honing his skills with the bow & arrow certainly paid off when he earned, yet, another lofty goal in state competition by taking 4th place. Jack's archery talents became so precise that he actually beat the great Fred Bear. And there was no greater fan of "Sports in the D" than Jack. Between his beloved Lions, Tigers and Pistons, Jack was never at a loss for watching his sports on television. Jack's education would ultimately bear some wonderful fruit when he was invited to join the team at DTE,…formerly known as the Detroit Edison Company. Over the years, Jack wore a lot of hats in the many duties and projects entrusted to him. He was a dedicated employee who extended the utmost in service excellence to both his team and the thousands of customers who depended upon his skills and expertise. After a long and distinguished career, Jack finally accepted his well-deserved retirement and headed off toward the next exciting chapter in life as a Golden Warrior. Jack was quite the diverse man when it came to his favorite pastimes, as evidenced in the difference from his sporting pleasures to his love of the arts,…specifically oil painting. A form of the arts that was self-taught,…Jack's works proved that he was more than merely a student, but a conduit from which flowed the heart of an artist ordained at birth. Jack was an immense lover of nature from whence came the amazing "landscapes" that flowed from his brush. Yet his subjects were broad, as depicted in one of his most notable works, the "Coffee Can." As an artist, Jack was honored and proud to be a member of both the Warren Society of Arts and the Fraser Fine Arts Society. His appreciation for the arts was also enjoyed through music, with one of his favorite artist's being the iconic, Frankie Laine. Talk about crooning, that boy had it in spades! And you can't tell a story about Jack without mentioning his prowess in the game of chess. Known as the "Game of Kings," Jack knew just how to command each play like a King commanding his army. Not merely athletic and artsy, but an intellectual gentleman as well. Truly, Jack was good at everything. Yet for as good as he was in deed, he was even moreso in his care for his fellow man. He thought of others before himself,…and as the old adage goes; "was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. Caring for others was simply synonymous with his nature, and that care touched a multitude of hearts and souls as he journeyed through life. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jack leaves behind a legacy of love that is sure to be treasured with each reflection shared by those who were blessed to know him. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Jack was the beloved husband of Marilyn, and dearest father of Barry (Sue) Shoemaker, Scott Shoemaker, and Lance Shoemaker. Loving grandfather of five, and brother of Dan Smith. A Memorial Mass for Jack will be held at St. Malachy Catholic Church on Saturday June 30, 2017 at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends at church after 9:30 am. Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd.) in Warren.
