Beckett-Brown & Hodges Funeral Home - Philadelphia Obituary

Jacqueline Elaine Jones Newman was born on Monday, June 24, 1940 to Beatrice Dean Jones and the late George Willis Jones. She was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 10, 2014. She was raised in Penllyn by her grandmother Bessie Reed.
Jackie, as she was fondly known, was educated in Penllyn and graduated from Ambler High School in 1958. She attended Cheyney State College where she received her BS in Elementary Education. She became a teacher for the School District of Philadelphia where she spent 32 and ½ years (she made sure that half was never forgotten) at William Dick Elementary School, 25th and Diamond Streets in North Philadelphia. She also shared her love for educating others at the Norristown OIC.
Jackie was united in marriage to the late Reverend Albert Milton Newman on March 23rd, 1966. To this happy union was born one daughter, Cherlynne Elizabeth who brought her much joy.
Jackie, accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour at an early age and was baptized by the late Reverend Guy Goodwin McGhee at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Penllyn. She later united with the Zion Baptist Church in Ambler under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Thomas E. Parker, Jr., where she served in numerous capacities as a devoted Christian woman. Her ministries included, but were not limited to Church Administrator, Director of Vacation Bible School for many years, Sunday School Teacher, Senior Choir, Trustee, Pastors's Aide and Women's Guild.
Jackie had an infectious cheerful spirit. Though she birthed one child, she was a mother figure to many. She enjoyed playing the piano, cryptogram puzzles, reading, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.
She leaves to rejoice in her memory, her loving, devoted care-taking daughter, Cherlynne Elizabeth Newman, two adored grandchildren, Lance and Sheridan Clarke, mother, Beatrice Perkins, three Sisters, Anita Scott, Janet Jones, and Sandra Bowens. Sisters-In-Law Ina and Linda Newman, Isabelle Lawrence, Iris Johnson, Carol Newman, and Francis Newman, one brother- in-law, Rupert Bowens and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
