I first met Jim when I was assigned to work with a new attorney in the Intellectual Property Dept. at Fredrikson & Byron. My immediate impression of Jim was that of a gentle, kind, and courteous man with a sense of humor. Although he was very busy with his practice, as well as wearing the hat of Department Chair, Jim always made himself available to address any issues, administrative or otherwise.
Pleasant memories that come to mind include our monthly department meetings in...

I met Jim several times when visiting Minneapolis seeking to establish links with US firms. He was always a delight to meet, and I am sure that he will be greatly missed.

I knew Jim for a couple of decades. My father, Orrin Haugen, was great friends with Jim, and he introduced me to him soon after I started practicing law in the late'80's.
Two things that I will always remember about Jim. I would run into him in the Minneapolis skyway system or outside sometimes, and the very first thing he would do is give me this sort of cocked head smile of a greeting, while gently leading me with a soft hand on the back over to side of wherever we were so that...

I had the great privilege of working with Jim at Fredrikson & Byron. Not only was Jim an astonishingly good lawyer, he was also an astonishingly good and fine human being. The patent community has lost a great role model, mentor, and friend. Jim will certainly be missed.

I knew Jim and Audrey's sons before I knew Jim. As teenagers all three boys were intelligent, hard working and leaders among their peers, yet they all had a strong sense of humility. When I met Jim I wasn't surprised to find that he was an accomplished yet humble man. He spoke softly and expressed his views gently, but his words were always of value. He will be missed by all who knew him, even by those of us who didn't know him well.

Mr. Haller, as he will always be to me, was a good and kind man. As one of Jim Jr.'s friends from high school, and swim team days, I enjoyed events at their family home, and always admired the Haller family. James and Audrey were suportive of me after college and he gave me time and mentoring as I started my career as well. He was a good man who will be missed.
