I had the great pleasure to work with Jim in the mid-1990s as an expert consultant. Jim was a wonderful attorney and a fascinating individual.

The families of Thomas E. Akers (deceased October 19, 2020) of Davidson, N.C., and Susan Akers McClanahan of San Rafael extend their deepest sympathy on the passing of Jim.

I worked with Jim for many years, first as his associate, then as his law partner. Jim gave great meeting, with his basso profundo, and his avuncular affect -- I couldn't do that, but a lot of what Jim taught me I was able to integrate into my own practice -- giving thoughtful, considered, frank advice, the good with the bad, knowing who's the client. I'm a better lawyer for having worked with Jim. He will be missed.

I offer my condolences to Ruth and the rest of his family.

Of course he was also a passionate supporter of both the Asian Art Museum and San Francisco Opera, volunteering as a supernumerary in many Opera productions. Jim had his lovable idiosyncracies, and was always willing to share his advice on healthy eating! Jim was always a great listener and we will all miss his...

Jim is the most respected in my lifetime. We span over 30 years working together, first as my legal counsel and later, after his retirement, as my most trusted advisor.
I will miss him dearly, and I, as a Buddhist, will pray for him and wish him forever happiness in the pureland
