James Joseph Porter Sr., 86, passed away after an extended illness on November 17, 2012, in the arms of his loving wife, Naomi.
Jim was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on September 23, 1926, the son of the late Joseph and Jennie Porter. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jim and Naomi Helms were married on February 28, 1945. Jim was a stationary engineer first class for Swift and Company in Omaha for more than 25 years. In addition, he was a certified welder and certified in air conditioning as well. He retired in 1989 and he and Naomi travelled around the U.S. first on motorcycles and later in RV's. They drove twice to Alaska over the Trans Canadian Highway. He moved to Myakka City, Florida in January of 2012 after living his life in Council Bluffs.
He was preceded in death on December 25, 1987, by his only child, James Joseph Porter Jr., who was a Vietnam veteran.
Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years Naomi; his daughter-in-law, Dr. Paula Porter, of Myakka City, Fla., and her significant other, Dennis Gilson. Jim was beloved by his wife's many nieces and nephews and friends.
Family visitation Friday, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral service Saturday, 1 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or St. Judes.
