Jan was a childhood friend— she would always win running races during P.E. wearing her little black and white tennis shoes (the ones that had stripes in the side). Sometimes after school we’d sit at the kitchen table and eat saltine crackers slathered in butter and Welshes grape jelly. She thanked me years later for introducing her to that after school snack. Later in life she visited me in San Francisco while she was at a conference. We enjoyed a great meal and had lots of good laughs....
