Jess Curley Begay, 80, of Nenahnezad, died at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, from a lengthy illness. Jess was the eldest son born at home on June 8, 1930, in Two Grey Hills, to Jim Curley Begay and Nannie (Bainbridge) Begay.
He lived in the Nenahnezad area all his life.
Jess was preceded in death by his parents; both sets of grandparents; brothers, Steven Clarkie, Jimmy Woody and Raymond Curley Begay; sisters, Rosalyn Curley Begay, Helen Clah and Edith C. Johnson; brothers-in-law, Rory J. Johnson, Ernest Eltsosie, Harry Sims and Buddy R. Bradley. Also preceding him in death are nieces, Nola Teswood and Pamela Pete; nephew, Jerome C. Begay; grand-nephews, Nathan Clah and Christopher Simms; and numerous other people he called friends and clan family.
He leaves behind Della, his wife of 57 years; his children, George Honnald (Elsie) Begay, Henry C. Begay, Harold C. (Vera) Begay, Laverna C. Begay, Loretta B. (Troy) Grimsley, and Halbert C. Begay; two brothers, Wilbert C. (Marietta) Begay and Robert C. (Esther) Begay; sisters, Alice Sims, Ena Eltsosie, Ann C. Begay and Ida C. Bradley. He had nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jess worked for the Navajo Tribe for 34 years in the Water Development Department. After his job was abolished, he began work at BHP Billiton for another 14 years and retired on June 13, 1990.
Jess was a Nenahnezad Chapter president for eight and a half years and assisted numerous community members with their homesite leases, grazing permits, and other projects to accommodate his community people.
Viewing for relatives and friends will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kirtland Stake Center, 10 Road 6523 in Kirtland.
Funeral services for Jess will follow immediately at 10 a.m. in the same location. Bishop Ellsworth of the 5th Ward will officiate.
Burial will take place at the Kirtland-Fruitland Cemetery in Kirtland.
A reception for family and relatives will be held at the Nenahnezad Chapter immediately following the burial.
Pallbearers are Nathaniel Begay, Carl Jim, David C. Begay, Lionel Begay, Tyrone Teswood and Louden Begay.
Honorary pallbearers are George H. C. Begay, Henry C. Begay, Harold C. Begay, Halbert C. Begay, Jackson Bunny, Tyler and Rose Teswood, Howell and Alice Pete, Sam Pinto, Daniel White, Ronald Simms, Nelson Simms, Raymond Simms, Wendell Simms, Norman Simms and Troy Grimsley.
The family would like to thank the nurses in the Intensive Care Unit and 2nd floor Dialysis Unit at San Juan Regional Medical Center. A special thank you also goes out to Dr. Bevan, Dr. Rondon and Dr. Pandya with SJRMC, and Dr. Percy and Dr. Wolfe with Northern Navajo Medical Center.
