Joan Carol Dickey LawsonMay 23, 1935 - March 9, 2021A friend called yesterday to repeat her condolences about Mom's passing. She asked, "Is there an obituary?" I was taken aback. An obituary? Should we write an obituary? Would Mom want an obituary? I asked Dad, he thought it was a good idea....

Not sure what to say?

I knew Walter and Joan, but recent years (too many) have seen us lose touch. Walt and I have had many interesting discussions on science, philosophy, and religion. I would love to get in touch with him. Could someone please give him my email ([email protected]) and my cellphone number (732 539 0328). Please tell him that I was asking for him.

Joan Lawson was my favorite English teacher at Groveton High School. She brought English alive, making every class interesting and thought provoking. I wish I had searched for her sooner, to thank her for the compassion she showed me in every aspect of class. Fair winds and following seas, Mrs. Lawson.

I miss you laughing

Joan's TJ colleagues are just now learning of her passing. I am so sad that my mentor and friend is gone. She taught me so much about teaching and about teen-agers, and we had lots of fun in the process. I can see her now with right index finger held high saying, "I'm not convinced!" I will always be grateful to have known Joan and to have been her friend.

As I was searching on the web today, I found you tribute to your mom. Joan was a special lady, wife, mother, teacher, and a friend. Her friendship over the years remained so important to me. We talked, laughed, prayed, worked, and enjoyed the life we shared together. So many memories, so many moments spent with her and your dad even though we didn't see each other in recent years, I always held her in my heart. RIP Joan.

Having had the task of writing my father's obituary I so appreciated the one you wrote for your mother. Your description made me wish I had known her, I think we would have become friends. Apparently her skills as a teacher were exceptional because your parting gift to her in this tribute is something to treasure.

Everything others said is so true. I shall always remember her in the Roanoke Unitarian choir & as a dear friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Joan's death. She was a great lady who I very much enjoyed getting to know. I will certainly keep Walter and family in my thoughts and prayers.
