Not sure what to say?

While I lost track of Joel over the year I remember my early school days with him and his Mother who gave so lovingly to those of us who were part of her Cub Scout Den. Joel will never be forgotten as I often think about him as a childhood friend.

I have been friends with Joel for the last year or so He will be deeply missed by many. I could not have asked for a better friend he was always making me laugh when things seemed tough
We were able to create a friendship that will forever he has left me with nothing but good memories of him
My heart goes out to his family God Bless you all in this time of grief............Nina Moore...Herrin

For what he was, a working jazz musician, he was one of the very best at what he did. If you're impressed by actor John Malkovich of Benton, IL you can be equally impressed by Joel's talent and life experience. His jazz pedigree is above reproach, of course. It sounds like he was an awfully good person as well, though I didn't know him directly.

I'm pretty sure Herrin's South Side Jr. High band program put a trombone in his hands in the late 60's. That would have been Carson...

To the family of Joel Helleny,

I was so shocked to read of Joel's passing. He was so talented and now he will be playing his Horn for the Jazz Club for the Lord. I remember him in the jazz club in Herrin High School. He was always smiling when he was seen in the halls of the school and around the band room. One thing about Joel, he never forgot where his roots came from. May God Bless all of his family and stay strong. This will get you through this hard time.

I knew Joel from my time in the jazz community of the University of Illinois and always enjoyed his company and music. Keep on blowin' Joel.
