JOHN JOSEPH ASCHENBRENNER SR. 1924 – 2018 John Joseph Aschenbrenner Sr. age 94 of Plattsmouth, NE passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, NE. John was born on February 1, 1924 to Frank James and Elizabeth Rose (Sabatka) Aschenbrenner in Omaha, NE. He was lifelong resident of Plattsmouth and he graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1941. After graduating from high school, he attended and graduated from Refrigeration Trade School in Omaha. John enlisted in U.S. Navy and whet to boot camp in Coeur d'Alene, ID. He proudly served his country during WWII for three years from 1943 until 1946. While serving his country, he served aboard the minesweeper USS Competent AM-316 during the South Pacific Campaign in the Solomon Islands for the invasion Peleliu in the western Carolines. Then, later the invasion of Okinawa followed by the invasion of Japan. John also helped transport burn victims from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and he earned three service stars, each signifying battles. After serving his country John returned to Plattsmouth, where he met the love of his life Shirley Vernal Speck. John and Shirley where later married on July 3, 1948 at Holy Rosary Church in Plattsmouth. They made their home and raised their two boys in Plattsmouth. John worked for the Civil Service Administration at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. He worked for over thirty five years, rising to the position of civil engineer. John always put God first and his family second, he loved travelling with his wife Shirley on vacations and he had a deep sense of home, where he lived until his passing. John was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Lepert Wolever V.F.W. Post #2543, Hugh J. Kerns American Legion Post #56, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #365 all of Plattsmouth. He is survived by his two sons: John J. Aschenbrenner Jr. in Malcolm, NE; Mark J. Aschenbrenner of Lincoln, NE; two grandsons: Adam Aschenbrenner; Tim Aschenbrenner and wife Sheree; great granddaughter: Jessa Aschenbrenner; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Elizabeth Aschenbrenner, wife: Shirley Aschenbrenner, and his brother: Frank Aschenbrener. Visitations will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Roby Funeral Home in Plattsmouth. Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Church of the Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Church of the Holy Spirit with Father Michael Houlihan officiating, Mike Kief and Jim Ulrich as acolytes, Terry Little as vocalist, and Carol Wehrbein as organist. The Pallbearers will be John Aschenbrenner, Adam Aschenbrenner, Mark Aschenbrenner, and Tim Aschenbrenner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mutz Sedlak, John Slatinsky, Leonard Kalasek, James Yelick Jr., Don Beins, Frank Aschenbrener, Jim Kozak, and Charlie Kozak. Military Rites will be conducted by Lepert Wolever V.F.W. Post #2543. His final resting place will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Plattsmouth, NE.
