A Memorial Service for John Stephen Avery (Steve), age 73, of Knoxville, TN, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday October 17, 2019, in the chapel of Ronk Funeral Home with Bill Mitchusson officiating. Internment will follow at Alamo City Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his mother, Rebecca Sue Fleming Avery.
Steve passed away quietly after a long illness on Friday, May 18, 2018, at National Health Care in Knoxville, Tennessee. Steve was the son of the late Harry Smith Avery, Sr. and Rebecca Sue Fleming Avery. He grew up on the Fleming family farm in Alamo, Tennessee and was a fifth generation West Tennessean. He was preceded in death by brothers, Harry Smith Avery, Jr. and Dr. R. Bruce Avery; and sister, Betty Sue Slaughter. He leaves behind five nephews including Steve Avery of Nashville, Tennessee, David Avery of Missoula, Montana, Andrew Avery of Los Angeles, California, Daniel Avery of Brooklyn, New York, and Mike Slaughter of Durban , North Carolina. Also, sister-in-law, Dr. Shirley Avery, six grandnephews and seven grandnieces. Steve attended the University of Tennessee and graduated from Union University in 1967. He then did graduate school studies in landscape architecture at the University of Tennessee. He worked as landscaper first in Knoxville and then in Eugene, Oregon where for many years he had a live radio show to answer questions about gardening. He also served in the National Guard for several years during the Vietnam era. Several years ago he retired because of declining health and returned to Knoxville to be near family. He will be missed.
Visitation for family and friends will be held, Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Ronk Funeral Home.
