I was lucky enough to work alongside John on the first of four stints with my hometown newspapers. After working as a reporter for the morning Advertiser right out of AUM, I became an editorial writer for the afternoon paper, The Alabama Journal. John was the editorial cartoonist, so we talked shop every day. I was 25 years old at the time, and a young journalist could not have asked for a better mentor than John Crawford. He was gentle and courageous at the same time, an unpretentious intellectual who was quick to sympathize but not easy to fool. When I left the Journal to join the Pensacola newspaper, John presented me with a wonderful cartoon, which I treasure to this day: a too-flattering (i.e., 50 pounds lighter) likeness of myself, sitting at my new desk, which happened to be positioned in the middle of Pensacola Beach. John was an exceptional man, and I am so thankful I knew him.

I always knew him as Johnny. He was my best friend as we grew up, attending elementary and high school, going to Ensley Methodist church. I haven't seen Johnny for over 50 years but from my knowledge of him in our younger years, I know he was a fine, decent man. I regret I never got to see him again. My condolences to his family.

Working with John for several years at the Alabama Journal was a real pleasure. He was a real talent and a gentleman and family man. Alan Mitchell (Montgomery, Ala).

I was blessed in being one of Johnny's many friends in the fifties at Ensley High.
The last time I had the pleasure of being with he and Cathy was at our 50 year reunion. My late wife, Grace, and I were their table-guests.
My only regret is that I did not get to visit with him one more time to laugh and talk!

Although I hadn't seen him since 1983, John Crawford is one of those you always remembered. A class act.

One of my favorite people. A talented guy and a compassionate friend. John attended my father's funeral in north Alabama when we worked together at the Alabama Journal. I will never forget his kindness and loving heart. My condolences to his wife, children and grandchildren.

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember your dad and mom very well from when I visited at your home growing up. Betsy, I haven't seen you in years and my brother Charles was always over playing with Chris. Again, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.

Iam so sorry for your lost, for these words are comforting{God will wipe out every tear from your eyes & death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry nor pain be anymore.} May God be your stronghold in this time of sorrow.
