John Papadakis was born October 9, 1926 in Kerame, Crete to Antonios and Diamanto. He is predeceased by seven brothers and sisters and survived by his beloved sister Aliki (Stelios) Alevizakis. In Greece, John was a part of the traffic police in Athens until coming to the United States in 1956. He returned to Greece in 1966 to meet his future and beloved wife, Elizabeth Hereti from Agios Miron, Crete. They returned to America to settle in as a family on the eastside of Detroit. John opened a bar and restaurant on Hart in Detroit with partner, Emmanuel Doulgerakis. He remained in business until offered a job at Chrysler Corporation where he worked until his retirement 17 years later. From Greece to America, John displayed a very strong work ethic. He received several special awards from Chrysler for his dedication and excellence. The highlight of John and Elizabeth's life was their loving daughter Effie ( Gust ) Papadakis - Bills and her family. They delighted in sharing in the lives of their cherished grandchildren, Yanni, Eleni and Elisa. John and his family were active and lifetime members of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. He is remembered for the years he was an active and endearing member of our Assumption Family assisting in many programs and events especially the Assumption Festivals. John also was involved in the local chapter of the Cretan Club. After retirement, John's life was fulfilled by the joy of watching his grandchildren grow. Later, he endured a long illness but persevered because of the desire to be a part of their lives. John is also survived by his sister – in – law, Katherine (Andrew) Simon, nieces and nephews in Greece and America, dear cousin, Mary Alogdelis and godchildren. May his memory be eternal.
