John "Johnny" Paul Shumans

Johnny Shumans was a man of music. He directed the Statesboro High School Jazz band. We played great music during my time there from 1975 to 1977. He had us attend a Maynard Ferguson concert that included the great Clark Terry. Magic. It wasn't till years later than a appreciated all the music he introduced to us.

My prayers are with you in the loss of Johnny. May you find comfort in the many years you shared. I fondly recall Johnny in the 80s as a bus driver and travel companion for the GSU Upward Bound Students. He was always full of life and joy. Peace and blessings.

While I was never musically talented, Mr Shumans never gave up on me. He was a great teacher and I have always remembered him fondly. RIP!

Heaven has gained a musically gifted angel and a wonderful man. Well over 40 years ago, Mr. Shumans welcomed me to William James Junior High and the band program even though I didn't play a band instrument. My family and I had just moved from Savannah where I had been playing in a string program.
