For his friends in Russia the news of his funeral was an awful blow. he was a great teacher, a great man, a loyal friend and a model figure as a scholar.
Dr. De Bolt did an outstanding work bringing the Russian and American people together. In the City of Orel, Russia, he managed to establish an inspiring program of sociological and cultural studies for the Orel State Unversity and CMU. Joe was one of the most intellectually courageous men I have known. He thought about everything. He saw vividly the instabilities in all the safe and sound stories of art and science that humanity uses to order its energies.

He was eager to engage with students and colleagues. His influence upon us was large and personal.

Less well-known about him is that he was also a serious athlete--a good tennis player.

I am so sorry for your loss, Michelle. Sending prayers of comfort and peace for you and your family.
