Not sure what to say?

Joe and I went to Norway together in 83 and then joined HMM 261 during Grenada and Beirut in 83-84; we roomed together for both cruises. We subsquently worked at group S-1 together. I worked with Joe every day for three years and lived with him for almost a year. In my career I have never met his equal--kind, thoughtful, serious, hard working, and funny in a wry sort of way. He was in my wedding party, and in the last few months has given me guidance, as I am going through the same cancer...

Joe and I went through flight school together and received our "Wings of Gold" together in 1981. Being a fellow "Yankee" stationed in North Carolina together we (Joe & Karen) shared many fun stories. In the cockpit, combat and camaraderie Joe was "tops" and I will miss my ole buddy. Semper Fi, LIVE

I had the privilege to serve with Joe in HMM 261 from 1982 to 1984. He was an exceptional officer and pilot. I watched and marveled, then and now, at the skill and maturity he and his squadron mates demonstrated that dark rainy morning in 1983. You made your CO proud.
Joe, you passed too soon, but you will not be forgotten.

As a Marine, I fondly remember the two of us almost drowning at Search and Evasion school and sharing many hours in the cockpit, on each occasion Joe was always upbeat despite the situation. As a friend I recall Joe and Karen always bringing a smile to our lives as I'm sure they did yours. I wish I could offer words of encouragement that would ease your loss, but let me just say Joe was the kind of friend we should all have...
Joe, my friend, here's to you. Semper Fi,

We are saddened to find out today that Joe passed away on 2 May. We were squadron mates on our famous Grenada/Beirut cruise in 1983/1984. Joe was a tremendous officer and a highly skilled CH-46 pilot. We last saw one another in 2003 when we celebrated our 20th anniversary reunion. Despite the years, I immediately recognized him. Not knowing that would be the last time I would see him, I will treasure that reunion all-the-more. Joe leaves behind his beloved family and friends who truly...

I was a squadronmate of Joe's in HMM-261 in '82-84, and we flew together during the Grenada liberation. He was a great Marine - sharp, serious, talented, and dedicated. Besides being a great Marine, he was a great guy ...period. I can think of no more loyal and trustworthy friend. May he rest in peace.

The Schiller family;

We are saddened to learn of your loss and extend our deepest sympathy.

Joe was a Godly man, a wonderful husband, father,brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Joe was so respected by everyone and was always thinking of others, never himself. Joe will be missed by us all. Love, The McGowans: Bob & Judy and children
