Joseph John "Pat" Petroski, 89 of Exeter NH died August 26, 2010 at his home at Riverwoods at Exeter. He was born in Exeter, NH on October 24, 1920, the son of the late JF. And Frances (Malewski) Petroski He would tell stories about sweeping the shoe shop in Exeter as a youth for 50 cents a week as easily as stories of teaching leadership to the athletes and educators of New England throughout his time as an educator and coach. Pat graduated from Exeter High School in 1939 with recognition in both academic and athletic fields and played for the Miami University and was headed for a career in professional football when he answered the draft to serve as a Master Sergeant in the signal corps for the United States Army and served in the European theater. Five battle stars later, he returned to complete his education at the University of New Hampshire with a BS in education and athletics in 1947 and Masters in 1953 where he also coached football, hockey and lacrosse from 1947 to 1952. He remains the beloved line coach and mentor of the undefeated football team of UNH 1950 when 60 years later they gathered to honor him with a special dinner in 2009. He earned his Doctorate of Education in 1960 from Harvard University. His lifelong dedication to education continued after UNH as Principal of Somersworth High School, Headmaster at Traip Academy, Kittery ME; Superintendent of Schools, Somersworth, NH; Superintendent of Schools, Sanford ME; Director of Extension and Summer Schools at UNH and later as Professor of Education at UNH preparing teachers, principals and superintendents for improved work at schools across the seacoast. He married Ethel Simpson in 1949 and is survived by his wife of 61 years and his daughter Ann Petroski of Chicago, IL. Services will be announced at a later date.
