Kenneth W. Hartley Marco Island, FL

Kenneth W. Hartley of Marco Island died June 7, 2011. He was born in Wheeling, WV, in 1915, to parents, Thomas Westley Hartley and Edna Mae Shaw, and spent his childhood and youth in northeast Ohio. Leaving Ohio he moved to Chicago when he took a job with the Hazel Atlas Glass Co. He met and married Mary Elizabeth Dannenberg in 1939. The couple raised their family in Chicago and purchased a vacation home on Marco Island, FL, in 1961.

A WWII veteran, Ken served in the European theater as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. In 1949 he joined the Chicago sales office of Dodge and Olcott, an essential oils and aromatic chemicals company, becoming Vice President of Sales. He and the family moved to Connecticut when he became President of the firm whose home office was in New York City, NY. He had been a member of the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and served as National Chairman of the Membership Committee and National Treasurer of the Society. He retired in 1975, although in later years he represented the tax interests of many small businesses through his position with General Business Services.

After the death of his first wife in 1982, Ken married Carolyn Hinson Remington of Stamford, CT, in 1985. Great grandfather, grandfather, father and husband, he was a gentle teacher of life, love and God for each generation. While his accomplishments in life were many his commitments were to family, friends and to his Lords' plan for him. He especially loved traveling and getting to know peoples of the world.

Ken was a devoted member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church of Chicago, where he was Chairman of the Capital Campaign, St. John's Lutheran Church, Stamford, CT, where he was recognized as Man of the Year, and Marco Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer of the Special Gifts Fund. Always active in his community, Ken was a long time member of the Stamford Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Order. He and his wife Carolyn particularly enjoyed traveling to many countries with the Marco Men's Club.

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, his brother, Donald, and his son-in-law, the Reverend James D. Schmidt.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his son, Donald L. and wife, Mary and their daughters, Jill Hartley Yokota and husband, Mark, and Kira L. Hartley; daughter, Deirdra D. Schmidt, and her sons, Jeffrey and wife, Alison, and Timothy; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by Carolyn's children, Denise Holmes and husband, David, Diane Radano and husband, Joe, Janice Doucet, and J. Zachary Remington and wife, Karen, nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A service of Thanksgiving will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Marco Lutheran Church, 525 N. Collier Blvd, Marco Island, Fl, and a service of Committal at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 2nd, 2011, St. John's Lutheran Church, Stamford, CT.
