Lauren Summers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2019.
Larry Summers, 95, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019, in Greeley, Colo. He was born at home in the Globeville community of Denver, Colo. to Loyd H Summers Sr and Elizabeth (Gerhardt). He was a 1941 graduate of Denver North High School. Larry earned a business degree at the University of Denver in 1949 and was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. During World War II Larry served with the US Army as a Tec 5 in the 124th Supply Corps in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He had the unique distinction of having flown, rode, and walked over the "Hump."

Larry and Maurine "Miki" Gilbert were married June 22, 1947, and together they shared almost 72 years of marriage. Through a career as a salesman and bookkeeper, he worked for the National Cash Register Company for over 30 years, opened Greeley Office Equipment, and later joined Colorado Register Exchange. Outdoor life was of special interest; he was an avid hunter, fisherman, bird watcher and wildlife enthusiast. He enjoyed fly-tying and collecting, which led to a large collection of fishing flies, ducks, coins, and cash registers. Over the years the couple travelled to all 50 state capitols, with additional trips to Ireland and other parts of Europe. Reading was a favorite activity, as well as crossword puzzles and logic problems. His storytelling is legendary, with tales of family, the war, and other tidbits of history. He was also adept at mechanics, inventing several unique tools and contraptions.

Survivors include his son, Roy Summers (Nancy Wingo) of TN; daughters Laura (Jim) Strong of CO, and Eileen (Peter) LaRose of NY; brother-in-law Don Johnson of CO; eight grandchildren: Kathleen (Marlin Mohrlang) Strong of CO.; Gwyn Wert of OK; Lindsey Summers (Harold Miller) of CO; Nikolas Summers of FL; and Zachary, Scott, Samantha, and Daniel LaRose of NY; and four great-grandchildren.

Larry was preceded by his wife Maurine; his parents Loyd and Elizabeth; his brother and sister-in-law Herbert (Dottie Ham) Summers Jr; and his sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth "Bettye" (Ray Summerson) Johnson.

A committal service and interment will be held Friday, May 17, 2019 with military honors at 1:15 pm at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO near the columbarium section (guests are to begin gathering at 12:45 pm at staging area inside entrance off Sheridan Blvd), followed by a memorial reception at a nearby hotel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, or the Union Colony Marine Corps League Detachment 1093.
