Apr 29, 1938 – Sep 10, 2019 (Age 81)
On September 10, 2019, Lenora Calkins Sargent died peacefully at her White River Township home, in the company of her family, after a reoccurrence of cancer.
The eldest daughter of Stuart and Hazel (Gannon) Calkins, Lenora was born April 29, 1938, in Muskegon, Michigan. She graduated from Muskegon High School in 1956, and from Hackley Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. She followed a career in nursing, while starting a family with her first husband. After her marriage to Norman O. Sargent of Montague in 1978, she became his business partner in Financial Principal of Iminco, Inc., in Whitehall, where she worked for 25 years.
She was active in the community, serving as president of the Miss White Lake Pageant, and as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. While their White Lake residence would always be called home, after retirement in 1992, Lenora and Norman enjoyed winters in Palm Desert, California. She and Norman shared a love for Bluegrass music, camping on their 20 acres in Kalkaska, and Boston Terriers. Lenora loved curling up with a good book, but wouldn’t turn down a game of cards. Most of all, she loved spending quality time with her family.
Lenora is preceded in death by: her parents, Stuart and Hazel Calkins; her sister and brother-in-law, Norma and George Lavasseur; her step-granddaughter Jeleesa Hutton; and her husband, Norman O. Sargent, who passed away in 2017.
Lenora is survived by her: two sons, Bruce Wendell Thompson (Paula), Brian David Thompson; stepdaughters, Sharon Sargent Eckstein (Brian) and Patti Ann Sargent; step-grandchildren, Brooklynn Perry, Leslie Boker (Elliot) and Lauren Boker (Schuyler); nieces, Lisa (Brian) Smith and Kathy (Scott) Babbit; and nephews, Rick (Manné) and Mark (Pam) Lavasseur.
Lenora’s ashes will be interred next to Norman’s grave in the Mouth Cemetery in a private ceremony. A gathering in celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, White Lake Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
