Mable McClennon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2019.
On February 17, 1921 Mable became the second of three children born to Allie Mae and Robert Woods in the family home in the Houston Heights. Her sister Adell and brother Bob both preceded her in death.
Mable attended schools in the Heights and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School which was then located in the downtown area. While in high school, her favorite extracurricular activity was being a member of the Drum and Bulgar Corps where she played the drums. After high school she attended Hughs Business College where she received a scholarship to attend what is now known as Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.
When Mable returned to Houston she trained and worked for Dr. Barnes as his dental assistance until she married Oral L. McClennon. She then devoted her time to her husband and two children Oral (Bo Jack) and Elizabeth (Sis). Years later her bright eyed baby boy Robert Woodie joined the family. He became everybody’s baby.
When Mable returned to the work place it was with the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Houston. Her assignment was teaching kindergarten. She later became one of the directors at Finnigan Park in Fifth Ward. There she mentored many young men and girls. She loved her job and the people. She later received a promotion and became supervisor of several parks. Her greatest achievements were establishing exercise programs, especially for the senior citizens, and bringing games to the reflection pool around City Hall during lunch time. Workers could play table tennis, board games and her favorite game, backgammon. Mable received numbers awards while employed with the City of Houston for her outstanding work.
Mt. Zion Baptist Church on 23rd in the Houston Heights was where the family worshipped on Sundays and during the week. When Mable moved to Galena Manor she joined St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church on 119 Fidelity where she remained until her death.
She loved, loved, loved the Women’s Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed overseeing Vacation Bible School. Mable was very honored when she was named Mother of the Church. She prayed daily for her church family and had a great love for Pastor Leroy and Deborah Lacy.
We will all miss those warm hands on the cheeks when she greeted you, kind words, generosity, encouraging words and not to mention those delicious rolls.
Mable leaves to cherish her memories Oral O. McClennon (Precious),  Elizabeth J. Hancock, Robert Woodie McClennon (Chandra); grandchildren Nicole E. Hancock, Lasjon Adams (Shata),  Kimberly D. Hancock;  Rachel Smith (Darren);  great grandchildren, Kayla Atkins, Jadlyn, Jennifer, Josiah and a host of cousins.

I extend my deepest sympathy to the McClennon Family. Sis. McClennon was a kind, sweet, loving soul who never failed to express our love. She made sure that you knew she loved you and we will miss her dearly.
