Margaret Robinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2015.
Yarmouth – Margaret Calkins Robinson, 100, was born on November 26th, 1914 in North Abington, MA. She passed in Yarmouth on August 17th, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Florence and Arthur Calkins and sister of the late Dorothy otter, David Calkins, and Robert Calkins. One sister survives, Barbara Eliades.

Margaret (Peg) grew up in Harvard, MA on a fruit farm (apples, peaches and pears) whose produce was sold locally and in Boston, MA. With her siblings she celebrated this 'growing up time' through many stories such as going to school in a horse drawn barge, picnics in the pasture, tending garden and farm animals, harvest time and the Shaker Village.

She graduated from Concord High School in 1933 and Massachusetts State College in 1937. In 1938 she married Leonard C. Robinson (deceased 1990). In 1939 they moved to Yarmouth, ME where they farmed and had two children: Rebecca (1940) and Cary (1943 – 1977) who had Down's syndrome. Rather than institutionalizing him or hiding him away at home, as was usually done then, he was exposed to society and society to him as much as possible. She worked at Pineland for many years at the Girls Life Cottage that was a half-way house for teenagers who could work and learn to care for themselves in a home-like setting.

She lived in Myrtle Beach, SC for many years and then Richmond, VA for twenty years. Her last five years were at her daughter's home in Richmond, VA. Wanting to be in Yarmouth, ME she moved back with her daughter and son-in-law for her last month. Being in Maine was very special for her.

She is survived by her daughter Rebecca and husband Dr. David Marsland of Yarmouth, ME; four grandchildren: Dr. Thomas Marsland husband of Joanna Ruth of Chapel Hill, NC; Dr. Eric-John Marsland husband of Dr. Amy Thompson of Cincinnati, OH; Katryn-Ann Banton wife of Dean of Richmond, VA; Jennifer Marsland of Richmond, VA; seven great-grandsons: David, Harris, Phillip, Mac, Thomas, George and Ernest all of whom she loved and knew well.

Peg loved people, to tell stories, to knit and sew, to read and write and to learn about the latest 'new thing'. For example, she enjoyed surfing the web. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A private graveside service and life celebration will be held in early October.

For those who wish, donations may be made in her memory to your favorite charity.
