Marilyn A. Harris, 68, of Springfield, a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School for more than 30 years, died on April 15, 2010 at St. John's Hospice, after a valiant two-year battle with brain cancer. She was born July 7, 1941 in Chicago, the daughter of Claude and Evelyn (Manning) McCune. The family moved to Michigan the same year. She married former next-door neighbor, Joseph L. Harris on July 28, 1962 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing, MI. The couple moved to Springfield the next day. Marilyn graduated from Resurrection High School in Lansing, MI, and attended Sienna Heights College in Adrian, MI. In addition to her long service at Blessed Sacrament, she taught at Infant Jesus of Prague in Flossmoor, and St. Cabrini and St. Agnes Schools in Springfield. She was an active member of the Illinois Science Teachers Association, Committee for the Advancement of Parochial Education, Metropolitan Federated Junior Women's Club, Springfield Crafts and Ceramics Club, and Springfield Sewing Guild. She was a former member of Oak Crest Country Club, Jacksonville Country Club and Panther Creek Country Club. She recorded one certified hole in one. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Thomas McCune; and a sister, Jeanette McCune. She is survived by her husband, Joseph; two sons, Patrick (Carla) of San Diego, CA and Charles of Torrance, CA; a daughter, Jeanne (Yuri) Teshler of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren, Will Harris (17), Ben Harris (15), Katherine Teshler (14), Rudy Teshler (12), Elizabeth Teshler (8), Caroline Teshler (6), Madelyn Teshler (2), and David Harris (1). Also surviving are two brothers, James McCune of Diamondale, MI and John McCune of Holt, MI; cousin, Mary Schneider of St. Paul, MN; and hundreds of former students who benefited from her remarkable teaching skills. Family will receive friends from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Funeral mass will follow the visitation at 6:30 p.m. with Rev. David Hoefler, celebrant. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following the ceremonies. Private family burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament School Improvement Fund, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704.
