Forever Remembered

Mary Duffield introduced and encouraged my lifelong passion of photography. She so easily gave of herself always optimistic and and full of life. She helped guide so many kids. Incredible role model and positive force in this world. What a great life.

Mrs. Duffield's first year at Santa Cruz High was also my first year in Journalism. I became Sports Editor of the Trident. In my senior Year, she picked me to be Editor-in-Chief...followed by Jan Quivey as next Editor. Jan and I see each other in Portland on occasion...and chuckle about our common experience with Mrs. D. We all hung out in evenings at the Sentinel, taking over desks, and carefully restoring them to the condition in which we found them (most of the time). Mrs. D was an enabler...

I WELL ALWAYS REMEMBER MARY DUFFIELD, I WAS ONE OF THOSE TROUBLE KIDS AT SCHS THAT MARY HELP. I KNOW SHE IS IN HEAVEN LOOKING DOWN UPON US ALL.

Thank you for being such a wonderful lady...and a superb educator. You inspired my beloved brother in your class at Santa Cruz High. He learned so much valuable information to prepare him for a wonderful career in journalism. As he passed several years ago....I want to thank you in his behalf. Your legacy will live on in the education community in Santa Cruz - and in the hearts of many. Bless you Mary!

Fair winds Mary

Three years ago, I was enjoying a visit with the most remarkable human being I have ever met: Mary Duffield, my beloved and then-95-year-old Santa Cruz High School journalism teacher.
At one point, I said, "Mary, do you remember when I wrote that story for the school newspaper, and it made the principal so angry he threatened to suspend me and shut down the paper?"
"Because you told the truth!," Mary said, banging the table with her tiny, wrinkled fist.

Mary was a mentor and intrepid soul. When a few of us visited her a few years ago, she said "take me out into the sun", then she proceeded to get up in her walker, played a few riffs on the harmonica and did a little jig...sound like the Mary we all loved? She really helped a lot of crazy teens during the 60's at SCHS. She taught me something about self respect and social justice while on the school newspaper and sailing on UNESCO adventures. A lot of people would smile if they...

Who didn't know and admire Mary Duffield that attended SCHS? I know as an alumni of SCHS "Class of 1969" we were profoundly touched by this great woman and teacher. My condolences to the family, friends and all of those who cherished this wonderful and great teacher, mentor, through-out her years and career.
