Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC - Middletown Obituary

Mary F. Homan, the family matriarch, loving wife, and doting “Great Mom-Mom” died July 5, 2020. She was 78 years old. She endured a lengthy illness with grace, passing in peace at home, surrounded by those dearest to her.

Mary was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, coming to Delaware after high school graduation to work for Bell Telephone. Her parents, Ann and Stanley Oakley, siblings John, Tom, Elizabeth, Ann, and Margaret followed directly.

She met Frederic (Fred) on a blind date to Rehoboth Beach. They married in 1961, and she cherished him to her passing.

“Great Mom-Mom” is also survived by daughters Nancy and Kristen, son-in-law Todd, as well as grandchildren Christine, Zachary, Eric, Stephen, Anja, and great-granddaughter, Briana.

She was preceded in death by beloved grandson Matthew. She also leaves behind an extended family, both of birth and marriage.

Mary lovingly nurtured husband, children, home, and hearth. She sewed, smocked, quilted, crocheted, painted china, and collected recipes for the benefit of everyone at her table. A Master Gardener and designer of Butterfly Gardens for children’s programs, all flora thrived in her care.

She retired after spending some years performing  ‘hearth cooking’ demonstrations, teaching visitors in Historic Houses of Odessa about colonial practices. Mary then devoted her time to Garden and Women’s Clubs, serving as President, and chairing ‘Christmas in Odessa’ to benefit college scholarship funding.

A viewing will be held Monday, July 13, 2020, from 6-8 PM at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, DE. Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at 11 AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, 2431 Frazer Rd., Newark, DE 19702, interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

Please plant a perennial flower in Mary’s memory. Each blooming will beautify our world, as well as bringing a smile in remembrance.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Fred and Family,

John and I were deeply saddened at hearing of Mary's passing. She was such a loving and warm person. I always enjoyed our lunches and really missed you and Mary after my retirement. Mary will be remembered in our Masses and prayers.

Thinking of you and family.
The Resine's (Ann and John)

I was able to speak with Mary in January after many years without contact. I have fond memories of her while visiting Aunt Ann and Uncle Stanley both in Ashley when they lived on the "hill", and in Delaware.
We pray for her and the entire Homan clan and know that Heavenly Father has a special place for her in His kingdom.

Truly sorry to hear of Mary's passing. Sending hugs to the entire family and praying for peace and comfort to each one of you.

Mary was my first cousin, her dad Stanley (Stosh) and my mom Steffie being brother and sister. My regret is losing touch later on. We loved visiting Ashley, grandparents, and Aunt Ann and Uncle Stanley and our six cousins. Mary being the oldest of the girls had additional responsibilities and took them in stride. I remember her studying to become a Master Gardener and how proud she was of the accomplishment. She was also happy talking about the Colonial homes events. I was sorry to learn...
