Mary M. Nelson
March 26, 1916 - July 30, 2016
Raleigh
Mrs. Mary M. Nelson passed peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2016, exactly 10 years to the day after her beloved husband of 62 years, George W. Nelson, passed. She was born March 26, 1916 in Rock Island, IL to the late Catherine H. and Ralph E. Smith. Mary was a wonderful person in every sense. Over 100 years in this world, she made us better people and had close friends from all walks of life. She was a living testament of the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Her generosity and compassion for humankind was apparent everyday of her life. She loved the Lord, her family, and friends with passion. They too loved her back with everlasting love. Those who knew Mary would agree that she lived her life as the Lord intended. She taught us that giving was always better than receiving, and she valued relationships with people far above anything material. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, John E. Smith. She is survived by her son, George W. Nelson Jr. and wife, Diane, of Gallatin, TN; daughter, Christine N. Simson and husband, Paul, of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Elizabeth N. McCabe and husband, John, of Columbus, OH, Benjamin W. Nelson and wife, Brittany, of Brentwood, TN, and Phillip G. Simson and wife, Laura, of Raleigh, NC; three great grandsons, Jack W. Nelson, Luke H. Nelson, and George M. Simson II; and niece, Karen VandeKerchove and husband, Pat, of Moline, IL.
Her family and friends will miss her dearly, but her spirit and the wonderful examples she set will live on forever.
Mary's family would like to thank all those at Brookdale North Raleigh (The Heritage), where she resided for 10 years, and Transitions LifeCare for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 26, 2016 at Brookdale North Raleigh.
Memorials may be made to Pinehurst United Methodist Church, 4111 Airport Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374 or Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
