Mr. & Mrs. Pfohl and family -
I would like to extend my sympathy for you following the death of Matt. I was so sad to hear of his passing last week. I served as the troop counselor for your troop at S-F Scout Camp many years ago, and I worked camp staff with Matt at Camp Gamble about 25 years ago. I am sorry I was unable to attend the wake or the funeral Mass. Please know that Matt and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

That is sad news. My name is Peter Urbani. Matthew was one of my climbing and mountaineering partners. I was a professional rock climber and he was and unstoppable wilderness guy, instantly he was a brother. As I grew older...Time put a lot of distance between myself and old friends like Matt. He was a great guy. Very talented climber , woodsman and adventure partner. I sure did have a lot of fun with him and his unique and contagious laugh. We climbed so much it was unbelievable. We spent several years climbing, paddling, hiking, and exploring. Hundreds of days outside camping. His talent and positive enthusiasm saved my life on many occasions. We were so poor we couldnt pay attention, but we lived like Kings. So many times his enthusiasm and laughter motivated me to push myself way beyond what I thought was possible. He was so happy being in the wilderness I dont remember him not smiling. People use to tell us we where running away from the real world (maybe we were ) but I know that in Matts case......the Woods and nature was his real world. I cant possibly imagine the hurt that his family must be going through. I have not seen Matt for many years. When I heard about his passing I pulled out a big box of climbing pictures. It was important to me to share my stories with my family and tell them about him. At first it was hard for me tell talk about this loss. Then as I went from one story to the next it reminded me of just how much of an impact he had on me. My life is sweeter for knowing him.
