I never knew Max personally, but I learned of him through my father, Paul Hale DeShong, who died April 8, 2003. My father was Ruby Gillette's grandson (son of Earl DeShong) and was born about a month before Max. Although they were in different branches of the service, they both served in Korea. My wife and I send our condolences, as we imagine the two of them together as boys years ago in West Michigan.
