Maxine A. Johnson passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Manchester, NH on September 20, 2024. Born on October 12, 1936 to Edward And Leola McAtee (Scribner) of Plymouth, Maine. Maxine, as a teenager, frequented the Bangor Raceway to watch the horseracing there. It was there that she met her future husband, Harry W. Johnson Jr. They shared a love for horses and, when Harry returned from his army post in Europe in 1954 they married. A wonderful marriage lasting 64 years ending when Harry died in 2018. The couple had owned several racehorses and ran them at Bangor Raceway amongst many other racetracks.
Maxine had a career in healthcare. She was an LNA at Downeast Community Hospital until she retired. She and her husband remained active into their 80’s often riding ATVs through Maine’s wooded trails encountering much wildlife. Maxine was always quick witted even in her final days provoking much laughter. A favorite thing was always shopping for her next new car! Maxine enjoyed cooking or baking her famous molasses cookies, farming, horseracing, and family gatherings. Daises delighted Maxine perhaps because her children picked so many bouquets and occasionally snakes thought to be pretty shoelaces. Snakes or daisies, the smallest gifts and gestures pleased her so much. Music was her passion and when heard, Maxine was either dancing or tapping her toes. A skillful dancer, she gracefully mesmerized all who watched. Maxine was loved by so many, whether called Tinker, Max, or Mac, she will remain in many hearts and will not be forgotten.
