Not sure what to say?

I don't know what prompted me to google Mayo (perhaps because it was a quiet moment and I started to think of my 50+ year life in surgery. Two of those years were spent at the US Army hospital Ft. Devens Mass. I was assigned to the surgical staff that had only one surgeon to service a large civilian patient load in addition to returning Vietnam wounded in need of further care. That surgeon was Mayo Johnson. We became friends and it was an easy thing to do. Rest in peace my friend. James...

One of those people in life you are always better for having met and spoken with. He was so aware of the world around him, and could cut to the heart of the matter in an instant, offering thoughts and suggestions which moved that part of the world forward at the moment. So engaged at all times with a gentle, pleasant manner which belied his massive impact on those around him. You will be missed!

It was with a great sadness that I learned of Mayo's death. He was an absolutely wonderful friend from many years ago. He and I were fellow surgical residents at the old Brigham hospital where he may have been the most efficient, and certainly the most cheerful, of all the residents on the surgical service.
He will be long remembered, and missed, by those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Hello,

Was a patient of the good doctor in late 70s. Had been dealing with back issue for years without success. He offered me a solution with a high level of success.

Over 30 years later I have not had a problem thanks to his care and ability.

He had changed my life.

A very kind and intelligent person.

A truly kind and compassionate friend, colleague and mentor. He was an inspiration to me...I only wish I could be more like him personally and professionally. I do not recall a single day...of the many we worked together...when he was in a bad mood or had a bad word to say of anyone. A gentleman in the finest tradition. I am grateful to have known him and will cherish his memory.

Jeff Melamed, staff radiologist, Beverly Hospital

Troubled by a painful ingrown nail on my great toe way back in 1966, I contacted Mayo only at the last minute before our family's scheduled departure for for a two week summer vacation.

In his kind way Mayo immediately arranged for me to come in that same morning.

After I was ushered to a table in Mayo's surgery with my sore foot exposed Mayo strode into the room accompanied by his anesthesiologist colleague --both wearing full white coats and surgical masks.and...

To Julie, Charlotte and Kenneth - I am sorry for your loss and send my condolences and love. Dr. Johnson was a humble and kind man, with a great spirit and zest for life. His love of family and service to others were an inspiration. I have fond memories of your family when the children were young and appreciated Julie and Dr. Johnson giving me my first job. Peace be with you and your loved ones.

I am privileged to have known "Uncle Mayo," even if only for the past few years. His friendly welcome into the extended family showed his open-heartedness, and his presence at our recent wedding on Jack Knife Point was a true honor and delight. I will deeply miss sharing conversation (and a martini) with him at our anniversary!
